The basics
What is a domain name?
It’s your address on the internet. Behind every website is a server with a number for an address, such as 185.12.44.9. The Domain Name System (DNS) turns a name people can remember into that number.
You register a domain for one year or longer and renew it to keep it. It gives you a home for your website and a professional email address, and lets you connect services like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
Choosing a good domain
- 1Keep it shortShort beats descriptive if you have to choose. It’s easier to type on a phone and to remember.
- 2Make it sayableAvoid names that only work written down. If you have to spell it out on the phone, think again.
- 3Hyphens are a last resortPeople forget them, and type the version without.
- 4Don’t build in anything that changesA town, a year, a product line or a phone number in the domain is a rebrand waiting to happen.
- 5Match your audience.co.uk reads as a UK business, .uk is shorter and modern, .com for global reach and .io for tech.

We email reminders 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before expiry. Turn on auto-renew in the client area and we renew it 14 days before it expires. If a domain does lapse, your website and email stop working, but there is a grace period to renew it before it goes into redemption and back on public sale.
Registries such as Nominet (.uk) and Verisign (.com) set wholesale prices, and first-year offers are discounted below that. We show the renewal price with every search result and in our price list so there are no surprises.
Both are run by Nominet and both are trusted in the UK. .co.uk reads as a UK business, and .uk is shorter and modern, a perfectly respectable primary domain. If you can, register both and forward one to the other.
For .uk domains, ask your current provider to change the IPS tag to EZEE. For most other extensions, unlock the domain, get the EPP code and start a transfer here. A registrar can only refuse a transfer in limited cases, such as suspected fraud or a court order, and has to tell you why. If you get stuck, call us and we’ll help.
Yes. You can register a domain before you have hosting, and you don’t need to host it at all. To use it just for email, point the MX records at our email, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
For .uk domains, the registrant’s name and address aren’t shown in public WHOIS by default. For other extensions, ID protection is offered when you set up the domain.
