What is web hosting, in plain English?

Your website is a set of files. Hosting is the space on a server where those files live, so that anyone typing your address into a browser can see them. We keep that server running, fast and secure, 24 hours a day. You need two things to be online: the hosting, and a domain name for people to type. We can provide both.

Is a domain name the same as web hosting?

No, and it is the single most common mix-up. The domain is the address (yourbusiness.co.uk); the hosting is the land the house is built on. You need both, and they can be bought from different companies, though it is simpler when they are in one place. If you already own a domain elsewhere you can point it at us and leave it where it is, or transfer it across so there is one bill and one login.

Do I get email addresses with my hosting?

Yes. Every plan includes email at your own domain, so you can be [email protected] rather than a Gmail or Hotmail address. It works on your phone, your laptop and through webmail in any browser, and we will help you set it up on your devices if you would like.

Do I need to be technical to use this?

No. Most of our customers never touch anything beyond email setup. We handle the servers, the security, the updates and the backups. If you do want to get into it, everything is there in your control panel, and our how-to guides and support team will talk you through it.

How many websites and email accounts can I host?

The allowances for storage, sites and mailboxes are listed against each plan in the plan comparison above. You can move up a plan at any time without moving your website or changing anything, and we will only suggest it when you genuinely need it. If you are hosting sites for clients rather than yourself, reseller hosting is usually the better fit.

Can you move my existing website across?

Yes, and it is free. Our UK team moves your website, email and databases from your current host, tests everything, and only switches over when it is working. Your site stays online throughout. Most moves are done the same day, and we do this every week from IONOS, GoDaddy, 123-Reg, Fasthosts, TSOHost and others.

Will my website go offline while you move it?

No. We build a working copy on our servers first and test it there. Only when it is confirmed working do we change the DNS, and your old host keeps serving visitors right up to that moment. In practice nobody visiting your site notices anything happened.

Can I run a WordPress website?

Yes. WordPress installs in a couple of clicks from your control panel, and because our servers run LiteSpeed you can switch on its free caching plugin for a noticeable speed gain. If you would rather someone else kept WordPress updated, backed up and secure, that is what our managed WordPress hosting is for. And if you have not built the site yet, you can put one together yourself with our builder.

Is my website secure?

Every site gets a free SSL certificate, which is what puts the padlock in the address bar and encrypts anything your visitors type. On top of that we run Imunify360 malware scanning, a firewall, and daily off-site backups, so if the worst happens we can put your site back.

What happens if my site gets hacked?

Tell us and we will look at it. Imunify360 catches and quarantines most infections automatically before you would notice. If something does get through, we have daily backups going back far enough to restore a clean copy, and our team will help you work out how it got in so it does not happen twice.

Where are your servers?

Your website and email sit in our UK data centre, which means lower latency for UK visitors and your data staying in the UK. You can see every server we run, and its live status, on our status page, and there is more about the facilities on our data centres page.

What uptime do you guarantee?
