In WordPress Admin, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, choose the theme .zip, click Install Now, then Activate or Live Preview. To undo, go back to Appearance > Themes, activate your previous theme, or open Theme Details on the new theme and click Delete.

Before you start

  • You must be an Administrator on a single-site install. On Multisite, only a Network Admin (Super Admin) can install themes.
  • Use the installable WordPress theme .zip. Vendor download packs often contain extra files. The installable .zip must contain a theme folder with style.css in it.
  • Installing a child theme needs its parent theme present. If the parent is missing, activation will fail until you install it.

Step 1: Upload the theme .zip in WordPress

In your dashboard, open Appearance > Themes. Click Add New, then Upload Theme. Click Choose File, select your theme’s .zip, and click Install Now. If the theme is already installed, WordPress will detect it and offer to replace it with the uploaded version with a button labelled “Replace current with uploaded”. Use this to perform a manual update without FTP. If the upload fails, do not retry repeatedly. See “If it does not work”.

Step 2: Preview, activate, and undo if needed

After installation, click Live Preview to check the theme before activation. If the preview is blank or errors, do not activate it. Click Activate only when the preview looks correct. To undo an activation that breaks your layout, go to Appearance > Themes and activate your previous theme. If you no longer want the uploaded theme, open its Theme Details and click Delete to remove it. After activating a new theme, check menu assignments, any widget areas if you use a classic theme, and your homepage settings. Switching between classic and block themes changes how widgets and the Site Editor work, so expect to reassign things.

If it does not work

  • “The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.” You likely uploaded the wrong .zip. Extract the vendor download on your computer and locate the installable theme .zip inside. It must contain a single theme folder with a style.css file in it. Upload that file.
  • “The link you followed has expired.” Your site’s upload or post size limit is lower than the .zip size, or the upload timed out. Open a support ticket and ask us to raise the PHP upload limits for your hosting, or use another install method from the full guide.
  • No Add New or no Upload Theme button. You are not an Administrator, or you are on Multisite. Ask your site owner to grant Administrator rights on single-site, or have a Network Admin install and enable the theme network‑wide.

What next

If you want the other routes, including manual updates and recovery if a theme locks you out, see the broader guidance in our Guides section at /guides/. If you would like us to check the upload limits, theme requirements or a failed preview, open a support ticket and we will take a look.

Common questions

Do I need administrator access to install a theme?

Yes. On single-site WordPress, you must be an Administrator. On Multisite, only a Network Admin (Super Admin) can install themes.

What if I see 'The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet'?

You uploaded the wrong .zip file. Extract the vendor download on your computer, find the installable theme .zip inside it, and upload that instead. It must contain a single theme folder with style.css in it.

Can I preview a theme before activating it?

Yes. After uploading, click Live Preview to check how the theme looks. Only click Activate when the preview looks correct.

How do I undo a theme activation that breaks my site layout?

Go to Appearance > Themes and activate your previous theme. If you no longer want the new theme, open its Theme Details and click Delete.

What does 'The link you followed has expired' mean?

Your site's upload size limit is lower than the theme .zip, or the upload timed out. Contact support to raise the PHP upload limits, or use another installation method.
