How to remove multiple posts with a single click in WordPress?

You can delete multiple WordPress posts at once using bulk actions in the Posts menu. Select the posts you want, choose Move to Trash or Delete Permanently from the bulk actions dropdown, then apply. Permanently deleted posts cannot be recovered.

Yes. In wp-admin go to Posts > All Posts, tick the posts you want, choose Move to Trash from Bulk actions, then click Apply. For posts already in Trash, open the Trash tab and click Empty Trash to delete them all in one go.

Before you start

  • Log in to WordPress as a user who can delete posts, for example an Editor or Administrator.
  • Decide if you want a safety net. Move to Trash can be undone within the Trash. Delete Permanently and Empty Trash cannot be undone.
  • If you need more than one page of results, use Screen Options to raise Number of items per page first.

Step 1: Select the posts to remove

  1. In WordPress admin, go to Posts > All Posts.
  2. Optionally filter by date or category to narrow the list.
  3. Click Screen Options at the top, set Number of items per page higher to bring more posts into one operation, then Apply. Keep it sensible to avoid browser timeouts.
  4. Tick the top checkbox to select all posts shown on the current page, or tick specific posts. Note that select all only affects the posts on this page, not other pages.

Step 2: Move them to Trash in one go

  1. Above the table, open the Bulk actions menu and choose Move to Trash, then click Apply. The selected posts move to Trash.
  2. Undo step: Click the Trash tab. Tick any posts you want back, choose Restore from Bulk actions, then Apply. By default, items stay in Trash for about 30 days before WordPress purges them automatically.
  3. If your site has Trash disabled, the Bulk actions option will be Delete Permanently and there will be no confirmation. Deletions are immediate and cannot be undone in WordPress.

Step 3: Permanently delete in one click when ready

  1. Go to Posts > All Posts > Trash.
  2. To remove everything in Trash at once, click Empty Trash. This deletes all trashed posts for that post type immediately.
  3. To remove only some items, tick them, choose Delete Permanently from Bulk actions, then Apply.
  4. No undo: After Empty Trash or Delete Permanently, the posts are gone. There is no Restore option.

If it does not work

  • Nothing happens when you click Apply: make sure you have ticked at least one post. Bulk actions only run on selected items.
  • Only some posts were affected: select all only covers the current page. Raise Number of items per page under Screen Options, or run the delete in batches.
  • You cannot see Move to Trash, Delete Permanently or Empty Trash: check your role has permission to delete posts. Empty Trash only shows for users with the edit_others_posts capability. If Trash is disabled, you will see Delete Permanently instead.
  • Browser times out on large batches: lower the items per page and try smaller batches. If you need help running a targeted WP-CLI delete on your hosting, open a support ticket and we will advise the safest route.

What next

If you are not certain a bulk delete is the right move, or you want a restore point in place before you empty the Trash, open a support ticket and we will look at it with you first. WordPress hosting with us runs on cPanel, so include your domain in the ticket and we can check the account alongside you.

Common questions

Can I undo a bulk delete in WordPress?

If you use Move to Trash, you can restore posts from the Trash tab within about 30 days. If you use Delete Permanently or Empty Trash, the posts are gone permanently and cannot be undone.

How do I select all posts at once in WordPress?

Click the checkbox at the top of the posts table to select all posts on the current page. To affect posts on other pages, increase the items per page limit under Screen Options first.

What should I do if bulk actions are not working?

Make sure you have ticked at least one post before clicking Apply. If only some posts were affected, the select all checkbox only covers the current page, so increase items per page and try again.

Why do I see Delete Permanently instead of Move to Trash?

Your site has Trash disabled. Delete Permanently is immediate and cannot be undone, so proceed with caution.
