How to Unsuspend cPanel user from WHM Account?
Learn how to unsuspend a cPanel account using WHM Account Functions. The guide covers the core unsuspend step, handling billing-related re-suspensions, and SSH alternatives for root users.
Go to WHM: Account Functions, Manage Account Suspension. Select the account, optionally tick Retain Service Proxying, then click Unsuspend. If the account was locked to prevent reseller unsuspension, only the root user can unsuspend it.
Before you start
- You need WHM access on the server that hosts the cPanel account. If you only have cPanel, settle any outstanding invoice at portal.hostworld.uk so automation can lift the suspension, or open a support ticket.
- If the service shows as Suspended for nonpayment in the Hostworld client area, unsuspending only in WHM will be re-applied by WHMCS. Clear the invoice first.
- Resellers: if the account was suspended with reseller unsuspension blocked, you will need root. If Step 1 fails with a permission error, open a support ticket.
Step 1: Unsuspend the account in WHM
- Log in to WHM.
- Go to Account Functions, Manage Account Suspension.
- Select the account. Suspended accounts appear in red on this page.
- (Optional) Tick Retain Service Proxying if you want to keep any existing service proxying.
- Click Unsuspend.
Undo: to reverse this later, return to the same page and suspend the account again with a reason.
Alternative: WHM, Account Information, List Suspended Accounts also lets you unsuspend directly from the list. Do not click Terminate Accounts. Termination permanently deletes files, databases and mail.
Step 2: Stop it re-suspending if billing caused it
- Log in at portal.hostworld.uk and pay any outstanding invoice for the service. Look for the unpaid invoice listed against your account in the client area; the invoice itself will show which service it covers.
- On payment, WHMCS will normally attempt to unsuspend the service if automation is enabled and the default overdue reason was used. If it remains suspended after payment, open a support ticket and we will review.
Undo: if you need to place the service back on hold for billing, tell us in a ticket rather than only changing it in WHM, so the billing state and the server state stay in sync.
Step 3: Unsuspend by SSH (root only)
This command lifts the suspension flags for the specified cPanel username on the server.
/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/unsuspendacct username
Options:
--retain-service-proxieskeeps existing service proxying.--child-okis for emergencies only on distributed or linked nodes. cPanel advises unsuspending from the parent node to avoid inconsistent state.
Undo: if you later need to suspend the account again, use WHM, Manage Account Suspension.
If it does not work
- Reseller cannot unsuspend: the account was suspended with reseller unsuspension blocked. Only root can lift it. Open a support ticket and we will clear or process the unsuspension.
- It unsuspends then re-suspends: WHMCS automation reapplied the billing suspension. Pay the outstanding invoice in portal.hostworld.uk, then wait for automation to run.
- Still seeing a suspended page or mail problems: it may be bandwidth limiting rather than a suspension, or a cached redirect. Check the bandwidth limit at WHM, Account Functions, Reset Account Bandwidth Limit. There is also WHM, Account Functions, Unsuspend Bandwidth Exceeders, but be aware that this is a mass action: it lifts bandwidth suspensions across the accounts on that server, not only the one you are looking at. If you only want one account back, handle that account on its own. The Manage Account Suspension page also shows how suspended-account mail is handled, which is set in WHM, Service Configuration, Exim Configuration Manager.
What next
If you need more depth on what changes during suspension versus bandwidth limiting, see cPanel's full documentation linked from their Manage Account Suspension page. If you run WHM on a VPS and want more admin tasks, read our VPS guides. If you are still stuck after the steps above, open a support ticket.
Common questions
How do I unsuspend a cPanel account in WHM?
Log into WHM, go to Account Functions > Manage Account Suspension, select the suspended account (shown in red), optionally tick Retain Service Proxying, then click Unsuspend.
Why does my account re-suspend after I unsuspend it?
WHMCS billing automation has reapplied the suspension. Pay any overdue invoice in the Hostworld client area and wait for automation to run, or use the WHMCS admin Unsuspend action to keep billing and server states in sync.
Can a reseller unsuspend a locked account?
No. If the account was suspended with reseller unsuspension blocked, only the root user can unsuspend it. Resellers should open a support ticket.
What is the SSH command to unsuspend an account?
Run /usr/local/cpanel/scripts/unsuspendacct username as root. Use --retain-service-proxies to keep existing proxying, but avoid --child-ok unless it is an emergency on a distributed node.
