The National Museum of Scotland has celebrated Calico UK’s role in the Scottish digital revolution when it unveiled the ‘Always On’ display in their new ‘Communicate’ gallery. The display contains the original access server and modems that former Calico owners Paul and Maggie Symonds used when they pioneered the first ISP in the Highlands back in 1994.
The new galleries champion excellence and innovation, aiming to inspire the scientists, engineers, artists and designers of today and tomorrow. The ‘Always On’ display puts Calico along side other Scottish innovators including Alexander Graham Bell and Dolly the Sheep. It also records that Cromarty-based Calico is still a pioneering company in Scotland, being the first to register a .scot domain name when they went live in July 2014.
