A few years ago Nominet launched the simpler, shorter .uk -ending domain names. If someone already had a .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain name they could reserve the equivalent .uk name too. This was to give them priority over the name to protect their brand if they wanted to. On the other hand, if no-one had already registered the .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk name then the .uk version would be available to anyone.
This priority “Right Of Registration” phase is now over and from now on you can register a .uk domain name whether or not you or anyone else already has one of the other endings – if the .uk version is available you can now register it.
This also means that if you were unlucky when trying to register a .co.uk or .com domain name then you could now try for the snappy .uk equivalent.
