Can i transfer a product domain to another client
You can transfer a domain or hosting product from one client account to another without interrupting the live service or triggering a registrar transfer. This is an internal ownership change in WHMCS billing, not a move between registrars. Hostworld handles the transfer on request.
Yes. You can move a hosting product or a registered domain from one client account to another without touching the live hosting or starting a registrar transfer. In WHMCS this is called Transfer Ownership. Clients cannot do it themselves in the client area. Ask us and we will perform the move for you.
Before you start
A smooth ownership change hinges on understanding what moves, what does not, and how billing behaves. Read this first to avoid surprises.
- Internal move, not a registrar transfer: For domains, an internal move in WHMCS changes which client is billed and who sees the domain in their client area. It does not move the domain to another registrar and does not use EPP or Auth codes.
- Who can do it: Stock WHMCS does not allow clients to transfer services or domains between client accounts. This is an admin action. At Hostworld we handle it for you on request.
- What will not change:
- Hosting services: The live cPanel account, VPS, website files, databases and email continue unchanged. Transferring a product or service in WHMCS does not rebuild, terminate or suspend anything on the server.
- Domains: The registrar, nameservers and DNS stay as they are. WHOIS contacts do not change as part of the internal move. If you want WHOIS contacts updated, ask us in the same ticket.
- Invoices do not move: WHMCS cannot transfer existing invoices between client accounts. Any unpaid invoices under the original owner must be cancelled on that account. The new owner will be billed by updating the service or domain’s Next Due Date so the next automation run generates a fresh invoice under the new owner. We can also raise a manual invoice if you prefer not to wait for automation.
- Pay Methods do not follow: Stored cards and bank accounts belong to a client account. After the move, the new owner must have or add their own Pay Method in their Hostworld account if they want autopay. Autopay details from the old owner will not be used for the new owner.
- Currency differences: If the two client accounts use different currencies, amounts must be recalculated at the point of transfer so future invoices are correct. The practical implication for you is that the receiving owner needs their Hostworld account set to their intended currency before we move anything. We handle the recalculation during the move.
- Do not cancel or terminate to change ownership: You do not need to cancel, delete or terminate a service to move it. Terminate in Module Commands removes the live server account and its data. Use an ownership transfer instead.
- If you run your own WHMCS: The Transfer Ownership action opens in a pop‑up from the More menu on the Products/Services or Domains tab. Disable any pop‑up blockers in your browser before you start or the action may fail silently.
- What we will ask for: To process your request quickly, gather: the item to move (service name or domain), the current client’s details, the target client’s details (name and email as it appears in our system), whether there are multiple items to move, your billing preference for the new owner (date you want the next invoice), whether the recipient’s account uses a different currency, and whether you want WHOIS contacts updated for domains.
Step 1: Decide what you are moving and why
Be precise about the goal. You may be:
- Moving a service such as shared hosting, reseller hosting, a WordPress plan or a VPS so a different company will be billed for it.
- Moving a domain so renewals and management appear under a different Hostworld client account.
- Splitting assets so one client keeps the hosting but another takes the domain, or vice versa.
Clarity helps us transfer the right items and set the correct billing dates for the new owner.
Step 2: Confirm it is an internal move, not a registrar transfer
If the domain is staying with Hostworld and you only want a different client to be billed, you need an internal move. Internal moves:
- Do not require EPP/Auth codes.
- Do not unlock the domain or trigger registry emails.
- Do not change nameservers or DNS.
If you do intend to move a domain to a completely different registrar, that is a registrar transfer and is a different process altogether. This guide focuses on internal ownership moves inside Hostworld’s billing system.
Step 3: Check billing details and currency for the receiving account
Decide how you want billing to work after the move:
- Next Due Date: Tell us the date you want the new owner’s first invoice to be raised. We will set the item’s Next Due Date so the next automation run creates the invoice under the new owner. If you need it raised immediately, say so and we can create a manual invoice instead.
- Unpaid invoices on the old owner: Let us know if there are any unpaid invoices tied to the item. We must cancel those on the old account before moving, because WHMCS does not move invoices between clients.
- Currency: If the two client accounts use different currencies, confirm the target currency. We will recalculate the recurring amount when we save the move so future invoices are correct. If the recipient does not yet have a Hostworld account in that currency, they should create one first in the intended currency, then we can move the items to that account.
Step 4: Gather the details we need
Put the following in one place so your ticket gets handled without back‑and‑forth:
- Exactly what to move:
- For a service: the Product/Service name as it appears in your Hostworld account, plus any identifying domain or hostname.
- For a domain: the full domain name, including the TLD.
- Current owner: the name and email of the present client account in our system.
- New owner: the name and email of the recipient’s Hostworld client account. If they do not have an account yet, they should create one first.
- Billing preference: the date you want the new owner’s billing to start and whether you want us to raise a manual invoice now or let automation raise it on the next run.
- Unpaid invoices: tell us if there are any and confirm you are happy for us to cancel them on the old account.
- Currency: if the recipient’s account uses a different currency, list it and confirm you want amounts recalculated on save.
- Domains only: whether you also want WHOIS contacts updated as part of the request and what the new contacts should be.
Step 5: Open a support ticket with the request
Submit the request to us and we will carry out the transfer in WHMCS. Use our ticket form so it is logged against your account and we can verify ownership cleanly.
Include the details from Step 4. If timing matters for billing, say so. If multiple items are moving, include a list. We will reply to confirm the plan and proceed.
Step 6: What we do behind the scenes for a service move
For transparency, here is what happens on our side when transferring a Product/Service to another client inside WHMCS:
- We open the current owner’s profile in WHMCS and go to the Products/Services tab.
- We select More, then Transfer Ownership. This opens a transfer window. If you run your own WHMCS and do this yourself, disable any pop‑up blockers first or the window may not appear.
- We choose the target client account and confirm.
- We verify that the item now shows under the new client’s Products/Services tab.
- We cancel any unpaid invoices that were linked to the service under the old owner. Invoices do not transfer between clients.
- We set the service’s Next Due Date under the new owner to the date you requested. On the next automation run, WHMCS will raise the invoice under the new owner. If you ask us to invoice immediately, we create a manual invoice instead.
None of this touches the live hosting account on the server. Your cPanel or VPS service keeps running as it was. Logins remain the same unless you ask us to reset passwords.
Step 7: What we do behind the scenes for a domain move
For a domain, the process is analogous but uses the Domains tab in WHMCS:
- We open the current owner’s profile in WHMCS and go to the Domains tab.
- We select More, then Transfer Ownership, choose the target client and confirm. As above, pop‑up blockers must be disabled for this action.
- We verify that the domain now shows under the new client’s Domains tab.
- We cancel any unpaid domain invoices on the old owner’s account.
- We set the domain’s Next Due Date under the new owner to the agreed date so automation will raise the renewal or recurring invoice there. If you prefer, we raise a manual invoice instead.
- If you requested WHOIS contact updates, we apply those after the move. If not requested, WHOIS contacts remain unchanged.
This is not a registrar transfer. The registrar remains the same. Nameservers and DNS settings remain as they are.
Step 8: After the move, ask the new owner to check access and payments
Make sure the receiving owner can manage and pay for the item:
- Add a Pay Method: Stored cards or bank accounts do not follow a move. The new owner should add their own Pay Method in their Hostworld account if they want autopay.
- Check upcoming billing: Confirm the Next Due Date and amount now showing in the new owner’s account match what you agreed. If anything looks off, tell us and we will correct it.
- Confirm access: For hosting, the server‑side account was not rebuilt. The same cPanel or VPS credentials will work. If the new owner needs a password reset sent to their email, tell us in the ticket and we will help.
- For domains: If ownership details in WHOIS should change, confirm the contacts now reflect that. If not, provide the correct contacts and we will update them.
If you operate your own WHMCS
Some readers run their own WHMCS and are looking for the admin clicks. The WHMCS documentation describes the current locations:
- Service move: Open the client’s Products/Services tab. Click More, then Transfer Ownership. Confirm the new client. The WHMCS docs explicitly state this does not affect the associated account on your servers.
- Domain move: Open the client’s Domains tab. Click More, then Transfer Ownership. Confirm the new client.
Remember the gotchas WHMCS documents:
- Disable pop‑up blockers before starting, as the transfer window opens in a pop‑up.
- Invoices never move between clients. Cancel unpaid ones on the old owner, then set the Next Due Date under the new owner to trigger billing on the next automation run or issue a manual invoice.
- Do not click Terminate under Module Commands. Terminate removes the server account. Use Transfer Ownership instead.
- If the target client is in a different currency, use the option to recalculate amounts on save so the recurring price converts correctly.
What next
If you want us to perform an internal ownership change for a Hostworld product or domain on your account, open a ticket with the details listed above. We will confirm the plan, cancel any unpaid invoices on the old account, and complete the move.
If your move involves a VPS and you are planning other changes after billing handover, our VPS resources may help the recipient get oriented. See our VPS guides. If you are comparing server options for a clean break rather than an ownership move, see our UK plans at Linux VPS.
Common questions
Can I move a service or domain to another client myself in my Hostworld account?
No. Stock WHMCS does not provide a client‑side transfer between client accounts. This is an admin‑area action. Tell us what you want to move and to whom using a ticket and we will do it.
Will moving a service break my website or mail?
No. Transferring a Product/Service between clients in WHMCS only changes who is billed and who sees it in their client area. It does not rebuild or remove the server account. Do not click Terminate if you are a WHMCS admin. Terminate deletes the live account and its data.
Do invoices and payment history move to the new owner?
No. WHMCS cannot move invoices between clients. We cancel any unpaid invoices on the old account, then set the Next Due Date under the new owner so automation generates a fresh invoice there. If you want it issued immediately, we can create a manual invoice for the new owner.
Does an internal domain move change the registrar or nameservers?
No. Internal moves are not registrar transfers. The registrar remains the same. Nameservers and DNS records remain as they are. WHOIS contacts also remain unchanged unless you ask us to update them.
What happens to autopay when the service or domain moves?
Stored Pay Methods belong to the client account and do not follow a move. The new owner needs to have or add their own Pay Method in their Hostworld account if they want autopay. The old owner’s stored card or bank details will not be used for the new owner’s invoices.
What if the new owner uses a different currency?
When we move the item to a client account in a different currency, we recalculate the recurring amount at the point of transfer so future invoices are correct in the target currency. Make sure the recipient’s Hostworld account is set to their intended currency before the move.
We started a registrar transfer by mistake. Is that required?
No. A registrar transfer is not required to change who is billed inside Hostworld. If your goal is only to reassign billing and client‑area access, ask us for an internal ownership move in WHMCS and ignore registrar transfer steps like EPP codes and unlocks.
If you want us to handle an ownership move now, send the details and we will take it from there: open a support ticket.
