Learn how to change your email account password using cPanel or Webmail. The guide covers both methods, how to update your devices, and what to do if login fails.

Change a mailbox password in cPanel: go to Email Accounts, click Manage beside the address, enter a new password in Security, then click Update Email Settings. Or change it in Webmail: Edit Your Settings, Password and Security, enter the new password, then Save.

Before you start

  • You must be able to log in to cPanel for your hosting, or log in to Webmail as the mailbox user.
  • Have a strong new password ready. You cannot view the current password, you can only set a new one.
  • Be ready to update the password on every device and mail app immediately to avoid lockouts.

Step 1: Change the mailbox password

In cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel for the domain that owns the mailbox.
  2. Open Email Accounts. Find the email address and click Manage.
  3. In the Security section, enter a new password. Use the Password Generator if needed and meet any strength requirement shown.
  4. Click Update Email Settings to save.

Important: on this screen there is also a Delete Email Account action. Do not click it. Deleting the mailbox removes the account and all stored mail permanently.

Undo: if you need to roll back or correct a typo, repeat the same steps and set a new password again. You cannot retrieve the previous one.

In Webmail

  1. Log in to Webmail as the mailbox user.
  2. Go to Edit Your Settings, then Password and Security.
  3. Enter the new password, confirm it, then Save.

Notes: the Password and Security option may not appear for the account marked as the default Webmail account. Change that one from cPanel instead. Some servers disable password reset at the Webmail login page. If you do not see a reset link there, change the password from cPanel.

Undo: sign back into Webmail and change the password again if needed.

Step 2: Update every device and test

  1. Update the saved password in each mail app on desktops, laptops and mobiles. Update both incoming (IMAP or POP) and outgoing (SMTP) settings.
  2. If you opened Webmail via cPanel’s Check Email, log out and test a direct Webmail login with the new password to confirm it works.
  3. Send yourself a message and reply to verify both sending and receiving.

If it does not work

  • You changed the wrong password. Changing the hosting account password in our client area (WHMCS) or in cPanel’s Password & Security does not change any mailbox. Go to cPanel, Email Accounts, Manage for the specific address, and set the new mailbox password there. If you cannot access cPanel to do this, open a support ticket.
  • Too many failed logins have blocked you. Devices still using the old password can trigger a temporary IP block. Update all devices, then wait for the block to clear and test again or try from mobile data. If it persists, include your public IP when you open a support ticket.
  • SSO is masking the problem or Webmail options are missing. Accessing Webmail via cPanel’s Check Email signs you in without testing the new password. Log out and test a direct Webmail login. If Password and Security is missing in Webmail, change the password from cPanel instead.

Common questions

Can I view the current email password?

No. cPanel cannot reveal an existing mailbox password. You must set a new one on the Email Accounts > Manage screen, or in Webmail’s Password and Security if available.

Will changing one mailbox password affect other mailboxes or my cPanel login?

No. It affects only that single mailbox. Your cPanel account password is changed in cPanel’s Password & Security, or via the client area’s Change Password for the hosting product. Neither of those change any mailbox.

cPanel says my password is too weak. What should I do?

Follow the strength meter. Use a longer passphrase or the Password Generator on the Manage screen. Include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols until the strength requirement is met, then click Update Email Settings to save.
