How to Limit Bandwidth Usage of cPanel user from WHM?
This guide shows how to set, change, and reset bandwidth limits for cPanel accounts using WHM. It covers setting limits per account, reverting to package defaults, and troubleshooting when changes do not take effect.
In WHM, go to Home » Account Functions » Limit Bandwidth Usage, select the account, set Monthly Bandwidth Limit (MB), then click Change. To undo and return the account to its package default, go to Home » Account Functions » Reset Account Bandwidth Limit.
Before you start
- Log in to WHM on the Hostworld server that hosts the cPanel account you want to change. If you have a reseller package with us, use the WHM details issued when the package was set up. Your services are listed in your client area at portal.hostworld.uk, and if you cannot find the login details there, open a support ticket and we will confirm them.
- Have the cPanel account’s username or primary domain to hand.
- Know that cPanel evaluates bandwidth once per day between 00:00 and 06:00 server time, so changes may not take effect until after that window.
Step 1: Set or change a single account’s bandwidth limit
- In WHM, open Home » Account Functions » Limit Bandwidth Usage.
- Select the cPanel account and click Limit.
- Enter the new Monthly Bandwidth Limit (MB) and click Change.
What to expect: the limit is enforced after the daily bandwidth check runs. When an account exceeds its limit, only HTTP/HTTPS is limited so the website becomes unavailable. The account owner can still log in to cPanel, and Mail and FTP continue to work.
Alternative paths if you prefer:
- Home » Account Functions » Modify an Account, then change the Monthly Bandwidth Limit (MB) for that account and save.
- Home » Account Information » View Bandwidth Usage, then click the edit icon next to the account to change its limit.
Step 2: Revert an account back to its package default limit
- In WHM, open Home » Account Functions » Reset Account Bandwidth Limit.
- Select the account and confirm the reset. This page only lists accounts whose current limit differs from their package.
This restores the account to whatever Monthly Bandwidth Limit (MB) is set on its package. To set a different number again, use Step 1.
Step 3: Change the package’s default bandwidth limit (optional)
- In WHM, go to Home » Packages » Add a Package or Edit a Package.
- Set Monthly Bandwidth Limit (MB), then save. All accounts assigned to that package inherit this value unless overridden per account.
Be careful if you use Modify an Account: choosing to update the package with the new values will change the package for every account on it. If you mean to change only one account, change that account’s limit and do not update the package.
If it does not work
- Change not showing yet: WHM applies bandwidth changes after the daily check between 00:00 and 06:00 server time. If you need the site back now, use Home » Account Functions » Unsuspend Bandwidth Exceeders to unsuspend all bandwidth-exceeded accounts until the next check. This does not raise their limits.
- Accounts not suspending when over limit: check Home » Server Configuration » Tweak Settings for the setting “Bandwidth limit check”. If it is disabled, WHM will skip automatic HTTP suspension for all accounts. Turning this on affects the whole server, so confirm before changing. If you are not sure, open a support ticket.
- Numbers do not match AWStats or Webalizer: that is expected. cPanel’s bandwidth figures use different methods to the stats apps. Trust the WHM bandwidth totals for enforcement.
What next
If you need deeper control by plan, keep limits at the package level and only override individual accounts when needed. If you are seeing unexpected suspensions or usage spikes on your Hostworld reseller server, and you want us to review the server’s settings, please open a support ticket.
Our shared, reseller and WordPress hosting all run cPanel, with WHM on reseller accounts, so these steps apply to any reseller package with us.
Common questions
How long does it take for a bandwidth limit change to take effect?
WHM applies bandwidth changes after its daily check, which runs between 00:00 and 06:00 server time. Changes may not take effect until after that window completes.
What services stop when a cPanel account exceeds its bandwidth limit?
Only HTTP and HTTPS access is limited, making the website unavailable. The account owner can still log in to cPanel, and Mail and FTP services continue to work.
How do I restore an account to its default bandwidth limit?
Go to Home » Account Functions » Reset Account Bandwidth Limit in WHM, select the account, and confirm the reset. This restores the limit set on the account's package.
Why do bandwidth figures in WHM not match AWStats or Webalizer?
cPanel bandwidth enforcement uses different calculation methods than stats applications. WHM bandwidth totals are the authoritative figures used for suspension enforcement.
