In the Gmail app on Android, add the mailbox as Other > Personal (IMAP) using the Secure SSL/TLS settings from cPanel: Email Accounts > Connect Devices > Set Up Mail Client. Use IMAP with SSL/TLS on port 993 for incoming, and SMTP on 465 or 587 with authentication for outgoing.

Before you start

  • Your full email address and the mailbox password. If you need to change it, do this in cPanel: Email Accounts > Manage.
  • The exact secure server names and ports from cPanel: Email Accounts > Connect Devices > Set Up Mail Client. Use the Secure SSL/TLS values shown there.
  • A working data connection on the phone.

Step 1: Get your exact settings in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel for your Hostworld hosting.
  2. Go to Email Accounts. Find your mailbox and click Connect Devices, then Set Up Mail Client.
  3. Note the Secure SSL/TLS values:
    • Incoming: IMAP 993 (recommended). POP3 995 is available but not recommended on phones.
    • Outgoing: SMTP 465 (implicit TLS). You can also use 587 with STARTTLS if your app prefers it.
    • Username is your full email address. The server name will be either mail.yourdomain or the server's hostname. Use exactly what cPanel shows so the certificate matches.

Step 2: Add the account in the Gmail app on Android

  1. Open Gmail. Tap your profile picture > Add another account > Other.
  2. Enter your full email address > Next. Choose Personal (IMAP).
  3. Enter your mailbox password > Next.
  4. Incoming settings:
    • Username: your full email address.
    • Password: your mailbox password.
    • Server: the exact hostname from Step 1.
    • Security type: SSL/TLS.
    • Port: 993.
  5. Outgoing settings:
    • SMTP server: the exact hostname from Step 1.
    • Security type: SSL/TLS on port 465. If the app offers STARTTLS, use port 587.
    • Require sign-in: enabled.
    • Username: your full email address. Password: your mailbox password.
  6. Finish the prompts for sync options and the account name.

Step 3: Undo or redo the setup safely

  1. If the account was added as POP, messages may exist only on the device. Export or back up those messages before you go any further, or you will lose them.
  2. In Gmail: tap your profile picture > Manage accounts on this device > select the account > Remove account.
  3. Re-add the mailbox using IMAP by following Step 2.

If it does not work

  • Certificate warning or hostname mismatch: you entered the wrong server name. Go back to cPanel's Set Up Mail Client page and use the exact secure hostname shown there. Do not guess.
  • Cannot send mail: ensure Require sign-in is enabled for SMTP and you are using 465 SSL/TLS or 587 STARTTLS. Do not use port 25. Many mobile networks block it.
  • Login failed: the username must be the full email address. If the password is unknown, change it in cPanel: Email Accounts > Manage, then update it in the app.

What next

Common questions

Should I use IMAP or POP on my phone?

Use IMAP. It keeps mail on the server and syncs read, sent and folders across devices. POP downloads messages and often removes them from the server, which leads to missing mail on other devices. If you must use POP, the secure port is 995, but we do not recommend it on mobiles.

Which SMTP port should I use, 465 or 587?

Use 465 with SSL/TLS. If your app prefers STARTTLS, use 587. Both require authentication with your full email address and password. Do not use port 25, as many networks block it and sending will fail.

What server name should I enter?

Use the exact Incoming and Outgoing server names shown in cPanel’s Email Accounts > Connect Devices > Set Up Mail Client. cPanel shows the hostname that matches the installed SSL certificate for your account. Using a different name can cause “certificate not trusted” or “hostname mismatch” errors.
