Developed to be lightweight, fast and reliable, CentOS is an excellent choice for VPS hosting. CentOS is originated from Red Hat Enterprise Linux so it’s secure, robust and strong. CentOS gives you high speed and stable connections without compromising security making it one of the best enterprise-level operating systems for web hosting.
Ubuntu is a popular operating system for VPS web hosting. Based on Debian and composed of mostly free and open-source software, Ubuntu gives you a flexible and stable hosting environment. This operating system is great for online projects that require a customizable stack, high speeds and robust security.
With Fedora, you get a well-designed, customisable and secure platform for VPS hosting. Fedora is open-source software based on and supported by Red Hat. The refreshing user experience from the GNOME user interface and simple operating system make Fedora good for beginners and more advanced users alike.
Debian is ideal for servers due to a combination of stability and high speeds. With Debian you get an operating system that’s flexible and reliable. One advantage of using Debian for your VPS hosting is the long release cycles. This gives more time for testing meaning fewer bugs. Easy upgrades and high levels of security make Debian a dependable choice.
If you’re looking for a remote desktop computer, then Windows VPS gives you excellent performance for a wide range of business needs. Enjoy seamless integration with Microsoft 365 Apps and Microsoft Teams and the ability to scale up your projects. With a Windows server you get a private machine you can connect to anywhere in the world which makes it ideal for your remote workforce.
We can provide you with a licence for either cPanel & WHM or DirectAdmin.
cPanel & WHM is the industry leading control panel of choice amongst many hosting providers. We are pleased to offer this feature-rich yet easy to use control panel straight out of the box for our VPS Hosting customers. Upon ordering your VPS plan simply select the number of cPanel accounts you want to license and our automated provisioning system will install cPanel for you. cPanel takes the pain out of running a server. It includes automatic updates and has an intuitive control panel that is packed with fantastic features.
DirectAdmin is web hosting control panel software, similar to cPanel, that lets you administer your web site and hosting options using a graphical, web-based interface. You can manage an unlimited number of websites, email accounts, etc. using a DirectAdmin control panel. DirectAdmin automates tasks so that web servers can be easily shared and give web site owners a way to quickly set-up and manage web sites. You can order a DirectAdmin licence when you order your VPS plan and we include the installation instructions within your welcome email.

If your site is outgrowing web hosting it’s time to consider a more powerful hosting solution. A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine that runs it's own copy of an operating system with root access. Choosing a hostworld NVMe SSD VPS is a flexible solution, as you can grow your resources on demand when you need it.
Each virtual server is completely private from other virtual servers and they function the same as a regular dedicated server. Not only will you be blown-away by the performance of our incredible VPS servers, but you'll also be supported by our very own expert team 24/7. Simply choose your operating system, place your order and it will be set up instantly.
We own and operate our own VPS infrastructure and have heavily invested in enterprise-grade hardware and our super-fast network to ensure we have one of the best VPS platforms available. Because we are in full control of our platform start-to-finish, we can provide a fully featured and high level of service at a low cost point. We are confident that our hosting service is one of the best on the market. In the unlikely event that another provider offers the same service for less, we will match them like-for-like.
Our servers have been optimised with the latest NVMe SSD drives and KVM virtualisation technology, offering your website the best optimum performance. NVMe provides a huge performance boost compared to SSD and HDD drives.
For those that love a statistic or two, here is how our VPS plans measure up according to the benchmarking tool, GeekBench.
|Features||GeekBench v4||GeekBench v5|

We use the latest in NVMe SSD storage technology in all our VPS servers, along with our high-spec server hardware to ensure the fastest platform possible.
With a traditional dedicated server, if your hardware fails then you get downtime. Our VPS servers are optimised with the latest RAID technology ensuring we have the best redundancy in place.
We don't believe in contracting you into a service and are confident that our VPS service speaks for itself. You are free to cancel whenever you like without penalties or quibbles.
Our UK network is protected from attack through in-line DDoS protection from Arbor, the world's leading manufacturer of cyber threat protection, network visibility and threat intellifence services.
Both our UK and US data centre has diverse fibre routing via multiple carriers and redundant core switches and routers. Our UK network has been independently-rated as being one of the fastest in the UK.
Security is paramount. Our data centre has internal and external CCTV systems, security breach alarms and is manned 24/7.
The term "VPS" is short-hand for Virtual Private Server. A VPS can also be known as a "VM" which is short-hand for Virtual Machine. These two names are interchangeable and refer to the same type of hosting. A VPS is different to a VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server).
A VPS differs from other hosting types, such as shared hosting, in many ways but one of the most striking differences between “standard” web hosting and a VPS is the level of customisation, control and responsibility that you have over what is done within the VPS environment. This makes it an ideal choice for experienced users who’ve outgrown standard hosting packages and need something with more resources and the ability to make tweaks and changes in areas of the system that you just can’t do on regular web hosting packages.
There are actually various different types of VPS environment, and the particular flavour we provide is called “KVM” (if you want to know what that is keep reading our FAQs). With a KVM VPS you have your own hosting environment with the resources you’ve chosen as part of the order process. This means you can install any operating system within the VPS; and to this end we provide some pre-built templates to make the process of bringing your VPS online a breeze!
Our Virtual Private Servers are self-managed which means we take care of the back-end systems to ensure uptime and stability is maximised. You as the VPS Administrator are responsible for the inner workings of the hosting environment.
Most VPS services are self-managed and management services are considered a premium service which you have to pay for. We don’t currently offer VPS management services.
Self-management means you’re responsible for the inner workings of the VPS environment. We’re responsible for ensuring network connectivity is provided to the VPS, as well as making sure the physical infrastructure your VPS is hosted upon is online and stable.
This means that you are responsible for maintaining the configuration of the VPS itself, within the Operating System and any other management tasks such as security maintenance, patches, kernel updates, software installation. Despite all of our VPS packages being self-managed, we’ll always try to help out as best we can, however the demarcation line for the type of VPS packages we provide is ensuring the VPS can be started, and ensuring network traffic is routed to the virtual interface.
Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) is an open-source virtualization technology built directly into Linux. This provides each VPS with all typical services of the physical system that the VPS is hosted on, including virtual BIOS (basic input/output system) and virtual hardware, such as processor, memory, storage, network cards, etc. As a result, every VM completely simulates a physical machine. This effectively means your VPS thinks it’s a full-blown dedicated server, so you administer it in the same way as you would a dedicated machine. However, with a VPS you don’t need to worry about the headache of maintaining a physical dedicated server, we take care of that.
A VDS is a variant of a Virtual Machine that has dedicated resources on the host machine that are not shared with other customers. This means that you usually have dedicated CPU cores, dedicated RAM and sometimes dedicated network bandwidth that no other users on the server can encroach upon. A VDS is usually most appropriate for very large projects or websites that absolutely must have access to all resources all of the time however a VDS has scalability drawbacks.
On the flipside we have VPS packages which share the host’s resources across the various VM’s on the host machine. As the resources are shared this means that they can be offered at more competitive rates and they still deliver excellent performance. VPS packages are provided on a “fair use” basis, particularly when it comes to CPU consumption. This is why unlike our competitors we we’re leading the industry by making it crystal clear what our policy is on CPU utilisation within our VPS CPU utilisation policy which you can read more about here: https://hostworld.uk/vps-cpu-utilisation-policy
If you’re comfortable administering a server with root access then a VPS could be the right choice for you.
If you’re somewhat inexperienced at administering a server then we do offer a few Control Panel options to make life easier. We highly recommend cPanel and DirectAdmin is a good choice too. Even with a Control Panel to make administering your server easier, you do still need to have a basic understanding of how to administer a VPS.
As you’re provided with full root access to your VPS you can install any software packages you require based on your website’s requirements. You can configure all of the necessary modules and packages. You can also keep an eye on your server’s resource consumption and make optimisations and improvements to speed up your website loading times.
Shared hosting packages provide a prebuilt hosting environment to quickly get your website and emails online. These are best for simple and small websites that don’t require many resources and don’t require any special software packages to operate. Shared hosting is also in a shared environment which means other websites utilising resources can impact your own website. This is largely mitigated through containerisation within shared hosting but it’s still a factor that should be considered. The barrier to entry is low for shared hosting as a point and click control panel is provided as standard with many features and settings already preconfigured, but the downside is there’s usually very little you can customise.
A VPS on the other hand gives you more resources, root access and free rein to use those resources as you see fit with a much lower risk of having to worry about other noisy neighbours impacting your website or project’s performance.
You can customise your VPS to the nth degree and have the environment setup exactly as you require. You’re responsible for all of the configuration within the VPS so you need to be familiar with administering a VPS to this level.
Ultimately this is a very difficult question to answer as each project is different and they all have different demands in terms of resource requirements, software packages and other configuration options. That said, this is the beauty of a VPS environment. You can start small and then if you need more resources later, then that’s no problem!
Our VPS packages are completely upgradable which means after you’ve upgraded your VPS from our control panel all you need to do is shut down your VPS and then boot it up again. You’ll then be allocated your new, increased resources right away.
This means that small projects can scale easily to larger projects if the demand for resources increases. You can also downgrade resources too however you cannot downgrade disk space due to the risk of data loss as part of the downgrade process, so bear this in mind.
You do need to be familiar with server administration at a basic level to get started with a VPS, particularly as we only provide self-managed VPS packages.
If you’re not familiar with server administration right now you can always learn! We provide some helpful how-to guides. For example, you can learn how to get connected to SSH with this guide:
How to connect to your VPS using SSH
Why not buy a VPS-0.5 as a starter VPS package and start learning today?
We provide 24/7 365 support via our ticket system and we’ll always try our very best to resolve or help fix an issue that you’re experiencing. However, we do only provide self-managed VPS packages so this is done on a best endeavours basis.
As they say, “With great power comes great responsibility” – this is true with VPS hosting. You have a lot of flexibility in terms of how you can configure and administer your hosting environment but you also need to know how to maintain it.
We encourage the installation of a firewall such as CSF (ConfigServer Security & Firewall) or other operating system specific firewall packages to mitigate against brute force attempts and other security matters.
All of our UK-based VPS packages come with market leading DDoS protection as standard which means your VPS is protected from distributed denial of service attacks.
Yes! All of our VPS’s come with a static, dedicated IPv4 address as standard and as many IPv6 IP addresses as you’ll ever need.
This means your public IP address will never change unless you cancel or fail to renew your VPS service with us.
The great feature of our VPS packages is that they are incredibly scalable at any time you desire.
When you’re ready for an upgrade simply go to your service within our control panel and then choose to either add some additional resources to your existing VPS package via the “Upgrade/Downgrade options” menu, or upgrade the base-package by clicking “Upgrade/Downgrade”.
From there, follow the instructions and then once payment is made simply shut down your VPS completely and then boot it back up from our control panel. Your new resources will be ready and waiting to be used.
